As a bartender, a clean and bright smile is a tool to put my guests at ease and welcome them to my bar. Maintaining a great smile is easier said than done. After long nights, I rely on coffee to wake me up and propel me through the day. It’s common to taste through new wines on menu, R&D drinks which contain citrus and sugar, or as many of my colleagues do, consume soda to keep them caffeinated and alert through a shift. All of these things can stain teeth and dull your smile. The one thing I have going for me is that I don’t smoke!
When I was contacted by Smile Brilliant to test out their teeth whitening trays, I was excited! Keep reading for your chance to win your own customized teeth whitening kit! These are like custom fitted trays I’ve gotten from my dentist in the past, but I was able to do everything from home.
In the teeth whitening kit I received, there were impression trays for top & bottom teeth and 3 sets of catalyst & base pastes. Also included were 4 teeth whitening gel and 4 desensitizing gel syringes. I’m not normally a sensitive person, I mean, my teeth aren’t, but it’s still recommended for a couple reasons: whitening will increase sensitivity temporarily & the desensitizing gel will block pores and nourish the tooth, promoting natural rehydration & remineralization. This also dramatically reduces re-staining as you eat or drink. If you do have sensitive teeth, you might want to read this article on the causes of tooth sensitivity.
The impressions were pretty easy to take. The instructions were very thorough and if you follow them, it should be a breeze. Make sure you have the kit, a stop watch(or your phone timer), some paper towels, and a glass of water before you start! I feel that starting with the lower teeth would be easier because there’s a little more margin for error with the top teeth. I ended up re-casting my upper teeth because I wiggled the tray around too much. Thank goodness for the extra set of paste! Here’s a really helpful video I watched that shows the process: How I Whitened My Teeth At Home.
It took about 2 weeks to receive my custom trays in the mail. Smile Brilliant recommends starting with applications of 45 minutes-1 hour and working your way up to 3 hours as your teeth are comfortable. I didn’t experience any sensitivity so I kept mine in around 2 hours on average. Afterwards, I used the desensitizing gel for about 20 minutes.
I’ve been seeing great results in the 3 weeks I’ve been using Smile Brilliant. The 1st week, I was trying out shorter sessions, so my progress was slow. To maximize the effectiveness of the sessions, Smile Brilliant recommends whitening at night before you go to bed, so you’re not drinking or eating anything afterwards.
In my case, I work at night, so I have to whiten during the day. I’m eating or drinking afterwards, so my progress has been slower. Normally, after about 7-14 applications, the stains should be removed from your teeth. I still have some, but I’m slowly getting there! Just like most things behind the bar, consistency is key.
This is more of a progress update and I’ll keep you covered on my final results! I’m happy that my teeth are looking whiter and you may have noticed I’m smiling a lot more in my pictures these days!
